EverythingALS App:
UI Design

The ALS Research Participation App is a revolutionary mobile application specifically crafted for individuals battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The primary goal of this app is to facilitate the voluntary participation of ALS patients in crucial research studies aimed at finding a cure for this debilitating condition.

Empowering ALS Patients: An App for Health Data Sharing and Research Engagement

This app holds significant importance for the ALS community, serving as a vital product for EverythingALS. Through the app, patients can view and share their health data, actively participating in trials that contribute valuable information for scientists and pharmaceutical companies. This data, in turn, plays a crucial role in the development of drugs, software, and devices. Recognizing the pivotal role of app users, it is imperative to keep them engaged in the studies, fostering a sense of participation and contribution to advancements in ALS research and treatment.

Re-Design

Where can we improve?

I was tasked with redesigning the app with a focus on accessibility for patients with weakened motor skills due to ALS. The previous design lacked accessibility, featuring buttons that were challenging to tap and an overwhelming amount of text. Considering that fatigue is a symptom of ALS, and it also affects the emotional well-being of patients, it was crucial to create a more user-friendly and emotionally supportive design.

The key concept behind the new design was to incorporate easily tappable icons and buttons, a vibrant and colorful layout with soothing colors, and a reduction in textual information. The restructuring aimed to facilitate seamless navigation through the app, considering the potential challenges faced by users with ALS.

Changes

The new design prioritized accessibility by streamlining app navigation, reducing text, and enhancing the clickability of buttons. The "Back to Home" button was enlarged to provide a more extensive surface for tapping.

Additionally, I incorporated a calendar feature in the wearable devices section, allowing users to select specific days. The calendar design was tailored to align with the developers' preferences and availability.

Previously, the app featured a mix of designs across its various features. Now, the app's aesthetic has been harmonized with a lighter palette of colors, creating a cohesive and unified visual experience.

Results

The continuous growth of the EverythingALS App has provided me with invaluable learning experiences. I have gained insights into the significance of user experience, not only for the company but also for advancing studies related to ALS. Collaborating with developers, project managers, clients, and investors to enhance the app in a startup-paced environment with an international team across different time zones has been a rewarding journey. My key takeaways involve actively listening to users and being unafraid to make substantial changes to app features. Navigating this dynamic environment has taught me the importance of knowing when to voice my opinion and when to focus on executing tasks.
